• The Areological Timescale

The Areological Timescale presented here isn't finished and never will be. Only the oldest part of Martian geological history is shown, because the Areological Institute recently ended the total mapping of all Noachian surface features which resulted in this reconstruction of the Martian Noachian Eon. This eon is very interesting because it has striking parallels with our own worlds history. It is almost a fast forward version.
Because Mars is smaller in size than Earth, her internal motor was drained at a faster rate. Also the differentiation into distinct layers like the core, the mantle and the crust occured faster. When Mars was solidified, volcano's needed to build up lots of pressure to penetrate the surface and plate tectonics was only possible for a short areological moment.

 • Description

On Earth very little is known about the oldest times because erosion and plate tectonics erased most of the evidence. Mars on the other hand has a southern hemisphere full of meteorite craters billions of years old. In the Terraean era sediments accumulated and water flowed eroding the layers at the surface of both hemispheres.
